⚖ Terms of use
Last updated 3 August 2026. Plain English on purpose — if anything here is unclear, ask us before you subscribe.
◉ Who you're dealing with
Budgeteer is run by Jonathan Mao, ABN 92 386 964 622, trading as Budgeteer. Contact: support@thebudgeteer.app.
By creating an account you agree to these terms.
+ What Budgeteer is
- A personal budgeting ledger: log expenses, track bills and pays, import bank statements, run reports, and mark expenses deductible for a tax summary.
- Free on every account: logging expenses, bills and pays, importing bank statements, budgets, and marking an expense deductible.
- The subscription costs AU$2.99 a month, which includes any GST, and buys three things:
- Reports — spending by category and over time, saved reports and CSV export.
- The tax report — deductible expenses summarised by ATO type for the financial year, with a CSV export.
- Receipt scanning — photograph a receipt and Budgeteer reads the total, date, merchant and category. Includes 50 scans per calendar month; the counter resets at the start of each month and unused scans don't carry over.
- If a subscription ends, nothing is deleted. Your expenses, saved reports and deductible markings stay exactly as they are, and reports and the tax report come back if you subscribe again.
⚿ Your account
- Your ledger is yours alone — no other account can see or touch it.
- Keep your password to yourself. Anyone who has it can read and change everything in your ledger. Tell us if you think someone else has it.
- Use Budgeteer for your own budgeting. Don't use it to break the law, and don't try to get around the scan limits.
▶ Paying for Budgeteer
- The subscription is monthly and renews automatically — AU$2.99 charged to your card each month until you cancel. There is no minimum term and no exit fee.
- Payment is handled by Stripe. Your card details go to Stripe and never reach Budgeteer's server.
- The price you pay is the one shown on the checkout page.
⏻ Cancelling
- Cancel yourself, any time: Settings → Manage billing opens Stripe's billing portal. No email, no phone call, nobody to talk to.
- Cancelling stops the next charge and keeps reports, the tax report and scanning switched on until the end of the period you have already paid for. You aren't cut off mid-month for cancelling.
- Settings will say "your subscription runs until <date> — cancelled, it won't renew", so you can see the cancellation took effect.
- Everything else keeps working, free, exactly as before — and nothing is deleted. Your expenses, saved reports and deductible markings stay put, and reports come back if you subscribe again.
↩ Refunds, and rights we can't take away
Our services come with guarantees that cannot be excluded under the Australian Consumer Law. Among other things they must be provided with due care and skill, be fit for the purpose we describe, and be supplied within a reasonable time.
- If we fail one of those guarantees you are entitled to a remedy — for a major failure, to cancel and be refunded, and for anything else, to have the problem fixed within a reasonable time (and to cancel and be refunded if we don't). Nothing on this page reduces that.
- Change of mind. Australia has no cooling-off period for things you buy online, and we're not going to pretend it does. What we offer instead is our own policy: email us within 14 days of a charge you didn't mean to make, or a month in which you've used none of what it pays for, and we'll refund that month. That's a promise we're choosing to make on top of your legal rights — it doesn't limit them.
- Refunds go back to the card you paid with, through Stripe. Email support@thebudgeteer.app — a refund is handled by a person, usually within a few days.
⌁ If the price or these terms change
- We'll email you at least 30 days before any price rise or any change to these terms that affects you, and say what's changing.
- A change never applies to a period you've already paid for, and never applies backwards.
- If you don't want the change, cancel before it takes effect and you'll simply not be charged again.
⏻ Closing an account
- You can close yours any time — email us and we'll erase it (see the privacy page for what that removes).
- We can suspend or close an account if payment fails and isn't fixed, or if it's being used to break the law or to damage the service for other people. Where it's practical we'll tell you first and give you a chance to put it right.
- If we close your account for any reason other than something you did wrong, we refund the unused part of the period you've paid for.
⚠ What we don't promise
- Scanning can be temporarily unavailable. There is a whole-service monthly ceiling on scanning that protects the service from runaway cost. It's rare to hit it, but while it holds, scanning returns an error for everyone until the next month. Reports, the tax report and everything else keep working.
- Scanning is not always right. It relies on a third-party AI service reading a photograph. It misreads things. Check the amount, date and category before you log it — that's why Budgeteer shows them to you rather than saving silently.
- Budgeteer is not tax advice and not financial advice. The tax report totals and groups the entries you marked deductible, using ATO categories. It doesn't decide what you can claim. Check with your accountant or the ATO, and keep your own records — substantiating a deduction is your responsibility, not ours.
- Budgeteer runs on ordinary shared hosting. We aim to keep it up and your data intact, but we can't promise it will never be unavailable. Statement import discards the PDF after parsing; keep your own copies of anything that matters.
⌸ Your data
What we store, who else sees it, and how to have it erased is on the privacy page.
